Style Spotlight: Yoga Basics with Sarah

Please help us welcome our new teacher, Sarah Cavric! Sarah just graduated from the OTY TT program in summer 2023. She's been an OTY yoga for many years and very naturally adopted the OTY style of teaching. In her daytime life, Sarah is a licensed therapist and social worker. You can find her on the OTY West schedule, where she's teaching Yoga Basics on Thursdays, 6-7:15 PM.

1. In your own words, how would describe the style of your class?

Yoga basics is a class for everyone. Whether you are stepping into the yoga studio for the first time or you have been a yogi for decades. First-time yogis will get a great foundation to start their yoga journey and experienced yogis will be able to return to the basics and get a delightful refresher. In Hatha, static poses give us the opportunity to explore poses and use props to enhance practice. This class will break down poses just a step further.

2. What do you like about teaching this style?

I love that that I get to help yogis get a good foundation that will take them through a lifetime of practice. On and off the mat. We were all beginners at one point and time. Sometimes we forget what it's like and how intimidating yoga can be. I think it's important to create a space where you have the opportunity to fail successfully. So much can be learned in failure. Especially when you commit yourself to come back again the next week.

3. What do you like about practicing this style?

Sometimes basics can be really hard and challenge you mentally and physically.

Sometimes, basics can be more about stretching, breathing and tuning into the sensations in your body. When I show up to a basics class, I don't always know what I am in for. When it's over, I leave feeling like the practice was exactly what I didn't know I needed.

4. Why do you think students should practice this style?

Students should practice yoga basics because it is accessible. Yoga basics is meant to be informational. Meaning, lots of cueing, props and exploring foundational shapes of yoga. If you are looking for a place to start practicing yoga, this it is! Don't know what the heck a downward facing dog is? Thanks okay. I'll talk you through it.
